A 35-year-old woman wasĀ shot and killed by her estranged husbandĀ while she was on a work call on Tuesday (April 16). The San Diego County Sheriff's Office said thatĀ Ashley BirdĀ was found on the couch in her home in La Presa, California, with a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ashley's younger sister,Ā Allison Saefong, toldĀ KNSDĀ that herĀ sister thought somebody was breaking into her houseĀ and went to check it out.

"My sister, she worked from home. She was in a Zoom meeting. At that point, she thought someone was trying to break in, and she left and she said, 'Hey, give me a second. Somebody is trying to break into my house,'" Saefong told the news station.

After she didn't return, one of Ashley's co-workers contacted her mother.

"My mom called me just before 11 o'clock, and she was hysterical, saying, 'She's gone. She's gone.' I shouted, 'Who's gone? Who's gone?' She wasn't giving me details. She said, 'Ashley. Ashley's gone, I just know it,'" Saefong said.

Authorities identified Ashley's estranged husband, 39-year-oldĀ Christopher Bird,Ā as the suspect in her murder. They found his body later that day in his carĀ with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
