TikTok & WeChat Downloads Banned In The US, Starting Sunday

All TikTok and WeChat downloads will be banned, starting this Sunday (September 20).

According to CNN Business, the Commerce Department announced the move this morning, as per President Donald Trump’s administration’s executive orders against the two social media apps, which will prevent app stores from distributing or maintaining WeChat or TikTok.

Users who have already downloaded the apps should not be impacted by the restrictions, however, improved or updated versions of either app will not be downloadable.

Speaking on Fox Business, Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said, "The only real change as of Sunday night will be [TikTok users] won't have access to improved apps, updated apps, upgraded apps or maintenance.”

Per a release from the Department, on Sunday, it will be illegal to host or transfer internet traffic associated with WeChat. TikTok will have the same restrictions starting November 12, the deadline Trump’s admin has to present a proposal involving TikTok’s Chinese parent, ByteDance, with regards to ongoing national security concerns about the app.

"Today's actions prove once again that President Trump will do everything in his power to guarantee our national security and protect Americans from the threats of the Chinese Communist Party," said Ross. "At the President's direction, we have taken significant action to combat China's malicious collection of American citizens' personal data, while promoting our national values, democratic rules-based norms, and aggressive enforcement of U.S. laws and regulations."
