Ten Arrested in Florida Gulf Coast Human Trafficking Case

BROOKSVILLE -- A two year investigation that followed the rescue of a teenage girl who was being sold for sex leads to the arrest of nine men and the person suspected of trafficking her.

Hernando Sheriff's Deputies, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and State Attorney General Ashley Moody took part in the news conference. The investigation started in Hernando, where the victim lived, but covered several counties as detectives say the victim was taken to several locations for sex, including hotels in Ocala and Chiefland.

Nienhuis says the victim was kept at a house that was mostly filthy, with animal urine and feces. The carpeting was removed and the kitchen had no appliances. The only room kept somewhat clean was the one used for prostituting the victim.

Nienhuis says the teen should have been learning how to drive, going to school dances, and preparing for college, not enduring

The men facing charges include an illegal immigrant, a retired postal inspector, a chef at a restaurant in Spring Hill, and a Pinellas County firefighter. Sheriff Al Nienhuis says one suspected john sent the victim pictures of his own daughter.

Moody said cases like this "as a mother, astound me... they are horrifying, they are tragic."

Detectives followed an anonymous tip that led them to the victim. The person suspected of trafficking the girl has not been named, because that might reveal her identity. More arrests are possible.
