Fireworks Bill Passes Hurdle In Florida Senate

It will be easier to buy fireworks in Florida if lawmakers pass a bill now working its way through the state Senate.

Senator Travis Hutson's bill would eliminate the requirement that people swear that they are using the fireworks to scare off wildlife. Hutson says people shouldn't have to perjure themselves just to buy some fireworks to set off in the back yard.

Under the bill, people 18 and up would be allowed to set off fireworks only on New Year's Eve, New Year's Day, Memorial Day, and the Fourth of July.

Local ordinances passed by counties or cities would still remain in effect and would have to be obeyed.

The legislature will convene for its annual session next month.

Even if the bill does pass, firefighters would still recommend that people attend a professional show at a safe distance, rather than try to set them off on your own.
