Quake Off Jamaica Felt As Far North as Tallahassee

TALLAHASSEE -- Tuesday afternoon's magnitude 7.7 earthquake between Jamaica and Cuba was felt as far north as Tallahassee, according to the feds.

Geologist Rich Briggs with the U.S. Geological Survey says it was intense along the coasts of the two islands, a "four or five."

Floridians mostly reported gentle swaying in high rise buildings.

Briggs says the quake was a "strike-slip,"meaning the North American and Caribbean plates moved sideways along the Oriente fault. He says that fault often has earthquakes, some of which are large. For example, a 6.8 quake struck in 2004 not far from the site of Tuesday's shaker.
