Florida Jobless Claims Increase, Bucking Nationwide Trend

Florida is the only state in the country that saw a major increase in unemployment claims last week.

The number of people filing for jobless benefits jumped by 31,000 people, to 206,000. That's up from 175,000 during the previous week.

While most states are seeing a slowdown in unemployment, Florida is seeing an acceleration, possibly because the huge backlog of claims finally getting processed.

On a national level, last week's first time unemployment claims totaled just 1.877 million.

As analysts had predicted, it was the first time that the number came in under 2 million in two months time, but it was higher than the expected 1.79 million.

The latest numbers are ahead of Friday's monthly report from the Labor Department, where some analysts believe nationwide unemployment could reach 20 percent.
