Pinellas Deputies Arrest Man for 1999 Rape Based on DNA

CLEARWATER -- After more than two decades, detectives have made an arrest in a sexual battery case.

They arrested 59-year-old Gregory Thompson Wednesday morning and took him to the Pinellas County jail, where he remains.

They say Thompson is the man who invaded a Dunedin woman's home in November of 1999 and assaulted her at knifepoint.

In 2020, detectives resubmitted DNA collected in 1999 to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Thompson's DNA was in the database from a prior conviction and forensics experts found a match.

In the original case, the sheriff's office says the victim left a door unlocked and Thompson hid inside, then attacked her when she returned.
